On the bottom right of our website, no matter what page or post you’re on, you’re greeted by the Facebook Messenger icon. On some pages, it will pop up with a friendly greeting. If it doesn’t interest you, you can click or tap the “X” to close the chat bubble.

You’ve probably had this experience with many websites, and for good reason: it’s an instant invitation to talk to the support or sales team about the products and services offered on that website, so you do don’t have to send an email and wait for a response.

If you have a website selling anything, then you’re going to want a chat system. It gives your visitors instant access to communicate with you and/or your team. The question is, which one is right for your website?

Below are the top five chat messenger plugins for WordPress (also available for other content management systems as well) that will help you communicate more effectively with your visitors.

Facebook Messenger

If you use Facebook for your business, you’ll most certainly want the Facebook Messenger chat plugin for your website.

The main perk is that it’s ABSOLUTELY FREE. Facebook’s revenue comes through advertising fees, so it is able to offer products like this for no cost to its users.

A second positive reason for using Facebook Messenger is that it links directly to your Business page on Facebook, and all of your messages will be segregated into different conversations. The reason for this is because your users must have a Facebook account to message you…

…which is also its disadvantage. Visitors who are part of a corporate organization and cannot use their personal Facebook account to message your business will have to resort to the traditional phone or email contact methods with questions or concerns.

If you’re interested in using Facebook Messenger for your chat system, however, there are a number of specific steps you’ll have to take to set it up.

Pure Chat

If you’re not interested in using Facebook’s free chat plugin, you may want to explore other options. One of our recommendations is Pure Chat, which is also free to use with a catch – you cannot view any of the data to track your messages, your visitor demographics, and so on.

Pure Chat was designed to help organizations have better conversations with their website visitors in the moments that matter most. They’ve eliminated frustrating costs and chat limits to ensure that you can leverage the power of live chat without having to worry about skyrocketing costs when your company grows.

This plugin is used by over 150,000 businesses around the world to support their live chat needs. Before Facebook Messenger, we used this as well to automate our conversations.

Oh, yeah – you can automate your responses with customers!

In fact, Drift prides itself on using automated responses to qualify leads in minutes, as compared to the “old way” of marketing. The “new way” is a term coined conversational marketing. Supposedly, the Drift Bot is supposed to be able to ask questions based on the parameters you set in your Drift dashboard. The only problem is, you’ll have to pay for the premium version to get access to more advanced features.

This chat service was developed by the folks at Roger Wilco LLC, based in Arlington, VA.

Their philosophy behind designing Chatra was that many chat services have a “clunky, corporate” feel – a sense which they wanted to eliminate from a visitor’s experience.

There are two versions, both “Free forever” and “Paid” plans. The free plan includes 1 agent account (only one person can access it at a time), use on multiple websites, email chat transcripts, and much more. The paid version, however, includes all of the features of free (of course) plus extremely useful functions such as detailed visitor information, file transfers, etc.

You may enjoy freshchat for its business approach of “simple, honest, affordable pricing”. You can get a free 30-day trial of this chat plugin by entering your email address into the front page of their website. The theme of their marketing is a garden, and likewise their pricing plans are displayed neatly on the front page.

With the FREE plan, you get the basics – a priority inbox to read all of your messages, you can integrate it on whatever website you want, you can use the mobile app to keep up with message, etc. As the plans increase, so do the features – some of them which are very important such as bots, triggered messages, file attachments, etc.

Remember, many studies have been done about the benefits of having a live chat embedded into your site’s contact functions. You could potentially lose thousands of sales simply because your customers don’t feel like filling out a contact form and waiting for your reply!
